Joshua Slocum born in Nova Scotia--a descendant of Captain John Slocum born in Wrentham, Norfolk, Massachusetts. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War he remained firm in his loyalty to England and removed to Nova Scotia to avoid being drafted into the Continental Army. His father John , however, sided with the American rebellion, serving as a private in Col. Silas Wheelock's (7th Worcester County) Massachusetts regiment.
