Portraits of Joshua and Ruth Thomas Winsor by Rufus Hathaway

Updated: Aug 10, 2020

Joshua Winsor (1749-1827) and his wife, Ruth Thomas (1755-1793) of Massachusetts, painted by Rufus Hathaway, who married Joshua’s daughter, Judith Winsor. The portraits provenance: Joshua Winsor to Ellis Winsor, 1797; to his daughter, Deborah Cushman Winsor, and by her to the New England Historic and Genealogical Society on October 9, 1893 (according to Nina Little) or more probably October 19, 1904, according to entry in NEHGS record; in September 1983 the portraits were in the collection of Peter Tillou Gallery, Litchfield, Connecticut, and in May 1987 in the collection of the Vose Gallery, Boston. It appears that the paintings were then bought by Richard Kanter. Acquired by the Kerns from Kanter on January 19, 2002. Sold at Skinner Auctions Lot 304 August 12, 2018, Live Skinner, August Americana, Session I.

Literature: James B. Bell and Cynthia Dunn Fleming, "Paintings at the New England Historic and Genealogical Society," The Magazine Antiques, November 1976, p. 993.
